Neon, an inert or noble gas with the chemical symbol Ne. Typically, the air contains about 0.002% of neon gas. Under standard conditions, it’s colorless and odorless.
But if you put this gas in a tube and zap it with electricity, it emits a bright crimson red color.
But are neon lights harmful? Can they kill? Read this!
As stated above, neon is an inert and rare atmospheric gas. It’s generally non-toxic at normal temperature and pressure. This gas also poses no harm to the environment. And because it’s chemically unreactive and forms no compounds, it’s unlikely to cause a damaging impact at all.
However, this gas can be lethal in large quantities. To humans, it can be considered a simple asphyxiant. This means that neon gas can remove oxygen from the air, especially in a closed area. And because of the lack of oxygen, this gas could cause a person to suffocate.
But will neon in neon signs kill you?
When you hear the words “neon” signs or “neon” lights, they don’t mean that they purely consist of neon gas. People usually use the word “neon” to refer to discharge lamps that may contain a mixture of gasses to produce various bright colors.
However safe it sounds, it’s still best to practice precaution when handling chemical gases. Being cautious and careful when dealing with chemicals can keep you safe from harm.
